Common Knee Injuries
Super Bowl 50 is this week and it is likely one or both of the Super Bowl contenders has been affected by a knee injury to one of their key players. Knee injuries are some of the most common injuries with athletes.
The knee is the largest joint in the body. The most common injuries include fractures, dislocations, and sprains. The high demands of sport often place stresses on the structures surrounding the knees that are too great which result in injury. The complexity of the joint and the number of components leave it more susceptible to injury.
Treatment may require physical therapy or even surgery. The necessity of surgery will depend on the type of structure that is injured, the severity, and the future usage of the knee, as well. Highly trained athletes will require that their knee withstand greater stresses versus an elderly person wishing to regain some range of motion and have less pain in daily life.
