Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States for both men and women. Heart disease is preventable, and it is never too late to start making changes toward a healthier lifestyle.

Coronary heart disease is when arteries harden and narrow due to plaque buildup. A heart attack can happen when the buildup blocks blood from flowing through the artery which prevents oxygen and nutrients from reaching the heart. There are certain lifestyle choices that can increase the chances of developing heart disease. However, some individuals have a family history of heart disease and they may not be able to stop it from developing, but they can minimize the impact with medication and/or a healthy lifestyle.

There are several risk factors that can increase your chance of developing heart disease or cause symptoms to get worse. They include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, and diabetes. These risk factors are cumulative and can worsen the effects of each other. They are largely controlled by lifestyle choices, so it important to take an active approach in prevention.
