Holiday Hypertension!

It’s time for the holidays which means family, friends, food, deadlines at work, and Black Friday shopping. There may be some great deals on the busiest shopping day of the year, but the intense shopping experience can be very stressful! The boss may need your projects completed before the customers go on vacation, and that can take a toll on your mental health. Too much stress can cause your blood pressure to rise. High blood pressure or hypertension is dangerous because the symptoms are usually mild or sometimes undetectable.

Those are higher risk for developing high blood pressure are people with a family history, anyone over age 35, individuals who are overweight, living a sedentary lifestyle, consuming too much salt, consuming too much alcohol, those with diabetes or kidney disease, and pregnant women. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, or peripheral artery disease.

Staying healthy and stress-free is the best prevention for hypertension. Lose weight, eat healthy meals, limit alcohol consumption, be more physically active, take medicine as prescribed, and learn about healthy blood pressure numbers. Educate yourself if you have concerns!

Relax and enjoy yourself this holiday season. Don’t let stress get you down or let it make your blood pressure go up! The pressure is on to keep your stress level in check!
